The work of the Institute could not be accomplished without the wide network of affiliated colleges and universities, institutions, maritime industries and trade bodies, government agencies, and other organisations. Both the Academic and professional Divisions are actively engaged in developing our network for the mutual benefit of all participants.

Research Collaboration

INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH

The Institute welcomes the opportunity to engage in industrial research with companies and has a significant number of current industrial collaborators. There are a broad range of ways to do this, each of which can be tailored to the needs of individual companies and the specific objectives in hand. Consultancy is often appropriate for very short term requirements, but we often build up larger research projects to investigate longer term needs.

A variety of funding opportunities are available, including

industrial involvement in grants from governmental bodies. The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council affords aconsiderable range of funding opportunities and grant applications that are supported by industry tend to be looked upon favourably.

Joint grant applications to the European Union are encouraged and several of the European Union's research schemes are highly appropriate for industry-institute collaboration.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

The Institute recognises that new opportunities arise when the under-pinning disciplines are assembled in a single organisation that is allied with a strong entrepreneurial ethos.

A key development planned for the future is to incorporate a number of independent small company incubator units within our research facilities to improve the Institute's commercialisation strategy even further.

The Research Office plays a key role in helping the Institute’s researchers to develop commercially viable discoveries and ideas– supporting them with legal matters such as intellectual property rights, obtaining patents and licences, and assisting in setting up companies where appropriate to develop ideas further and to launch products and products onto the open market.

ACADEMIC COLLABORATIONS

Collaborations are essential for our research to be world-class, for it to achieve impact in the real world and for preparing our students for careers in international shipping and global trade. The Institute is open to mutually-beneficial collaborations with academic partners. Such collaborations provide academics with the invaluable perspectives between institutions to cooperate in answering the toughest research questions. Inter-institutional collaborations are essential to the Institute's aim of being an international hub for maritime shipping and international trade study and research.

EDUCATION AND CONSULTANCY

Education and Consultancy Services works with companies of all sizes to create and develop value and with various EU and national and regional governments to support and grow their maritime shipping and related sectors by transferring new ideas and approaches developed by researchers at the Institute through a diverse range of education and consultancy services.

Our industry practitioners, all with many years of senior management experience, provide support for companies and public sector organisations. Their approach is very different to conventional consultancy – they work collaboratively to develop solutions and focus on transferring knowledge as well as delivering business results.
