An independent non-profit organisation founded in 1979, the Institute of Shipping and International Trade works closely with several major research institutes and universities around the world. Operating from our bases at Norwich and Ipswich, we also have satellite Learning Centres in Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and Essex. The Institute seeks to foster closer international relations through advanced scholarship and educational exchanges between the various nations of the world. The Institute provides an independent forum for scholarly enquiry and affords various financial support, facilities and resources to educators, scholars, researchers advanced postgraduate students.

An important part of our our work is to serve as a liaison between academia and the wider maritime and intermodal shipping communities. The Institute has longstanding links with regional producers and manufacturers, shipping interests, ports and port authorities, freight handlers, charterers, insurers, shipowner associations, P&I clubs, coastal and waterways agencies, and governmental and intergovernmental bodies. Working together with affiliate institutions and trade bodies, the Institute is committed to the development of East Anglia as a premier global trading hub in its own right and to position the constituent community with direct and independant access to global trading opportunities.
