Office of Fellowships and Grants

The Office of Fellowships and Grants serves as administrator of the Fellowship and Tenure Committee, which is responsible for the recommendation of Senior Fellows and for faculty advancement. The Office also administers Postdoctoral Fellowships, Student Grants, and other financial support and assistance opportunities available to faculty, researchers, staff and students. The Office of Fellowships and Grants serves as the central clearinghouse and ensures proper compliance and administration for all external funding resources of the Institute.

Senior Fellows

Fellowship is an important distinction within the Institute, designating the highest levels of service and scholarship. Faculty members who have achieved distinction in teaching, research and publication may be elected to become Senior Fellows. Usually the position of Senior Fellow is available only to faculty members who have achieved the rank of Professor and who hold tenure at the Institute. The Academic Division is led by the Dean and by the active Senior Fellows, who are together responsible for maintaining the Institute as a place of academic excellence, learning and research, and for promoting the welfare of its constituents more generally.

Emeritus Fellows

Senior Fellows who are retired from active service are awarded Emeritus status and are entitled to all the rights and privileges of Senior Fellows, however they do not participate in the governance of the Institute except in an advisory capacity.

Honorary Fellows

The Institute from time-to-time elects a small number of Honorary Fellows. This honoris causa rank is reserved for distinguished Alumni or other associated individuals who have attained high distinction in academic or public life. Honorary Fellows do not participate in the governance of the Institute except in an advisory capacity.

Postdoctoral Fellowships

Postdoctoral Fellowships are awarded to exceptional candidates who have completed or are very near completion of their terminal degree studies. These fellowships are awarded for a three- to five-year term and provide full financial support to awardees as they begin their careers in academia. Working in conjunction with the Office of Fellowships and Grants and the Research Administration Office, Postdoctoral Fellows are provided with access to a wide range of support services aimed at developing and focussing their career path. Mentorship is an important component of the Postdoctoral Fellowship program, and the Institute actively encourages and supports mentor relationships between junior and senior academic members.

Student Grants

Financial limitations should never be a barrier to otherwise qualified students from enrolling and completing their studies at the Institute. The Office of Fellowships and Grants provides a comprehensive financial aid services to students to ensure that they can concentrate on their studies without the stress and worry of financial difficulties. Students are expected to apply for student grants, low-interest loans and other financial assistance for which they are eligible from the relevant authorities in the UK or from their home countries. In cases where there are insufficient personal and family resources or where there is a shortfall in financial aid, the Office of Fellowships and Grants is able to access sponsored funding, scholarship funds, or fee waivers to fully meet the demonstrated financial needs of eligible students.
